I was drawn to studying psychology, philosophy and spirituality from a young age, in my early adolescence. I had my first psychedelic experience, which was with LSD, when I was 13 years old in the very safe context of being with my older brother. For the past 5 years I have engaged in psilocybin ceremonies seasonally, and micro-dose following the Fadiman protocol.
Part of what interests me are individual differences and resilience. I have a Ph.D. in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Western Ontario. My doctoral research culminated in a theory about resilience to psychological trauma, namely that resilience requires efficacy of person and of place. And resilience is a process characterized by toleration and transformation. It was this research that caused me to reflect more on my own experience of childhood trauma and what role early exposure to psychedelics played in preventing me from experiencing any mental health issues.
In 2019 I began to develop a protocol for psychedelic enhanced psychotherapy. As a clinical psychologist I feel there is value added by engaging in psychotherapy, particularly psychodynamic psychotherapy, while individuals are under the influence of a low to moderate dosage of psilocybin or ketamine. The protocols I have developed aim to help individuals gain insight into the aetiology and maintenance of the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that they wish to alter. This embodied knowledge is then used to inform daily, weekly, monthly and annual integration exercises.

I am open to and comfortable with using both semi-structured and unstructured therapeutic processes. In either case I begin with a thorough intake questionnaire in order to have a bio-psycho-social-sprititual understanding of the individual and what their treatment goals are. I use this history taking and clinical interview to inform a treatment plan. I would review the plan (even when the plan is to work with less structure) with the individual seeking therapy in order to obtain informed consent to proceed.
I believe that integration is essential to healing and to long term psychotherapeutic gains. If I am present to and/or providing psychotherapy while an individual is under the influence of psilocybin or ketamine I take notes which I analyze after. I use the notes to draw out key themes from the session which I present to the client at our first integration session. Informed by the belief that reality is co-constructed I always invite the individual I have the privilege of working with to share their experience of their psychedelic ceremony first. Then I share my clinical insights, and this facilitates a co-construction of meaning.
This is followed by reviewing an integration plan which will have been informed by observations and psychotherapeutic acumen as well as what the person I am working with shared about their experience of the psychedelic compound. The integration plan entails setting daily to annual intentions based on their treatment goals. I will continue to provide integration support to clients for as long as they would like, and typically meet weekly-monthly depending upon the client’s need.
