Key insight

Our emotional suffering is often perpetuated by our thoughts and the emotional charge ignited by them. However, self-talk forms the foundation of our perception, and when we change our self-talk, we change the structure of our inner world.

Through their repetition and concentration, mantras (or statements of profound spiritual truth) offer us a powerful way to calm our minds, clear away judgments, and to feel a greater sense of peace.

Mantras can come from a diverse array of spiritual traditions and languages, but they also can be personally created.

Practice

Thank you affirmation

Either from where you are sitting right now or perhaps during a walk, try looking around and saying “thank you” to whatever you’re seeing. Consider all the things that don’t often receive thanks too, like the sidewalk, the sky, trees, your coffee mug, etc.

This is not a dull or passive practice, but instead alive with creative potential and a pearl of deep primordial wisdom which is as old as the universe itself.

Try this mantra of gratitude and lovingly say this aloud or mentally repeat, “Thank you...thank you...thank you...” By blessing everything, you are imagining them as divine and appreciating the abundance around you.

Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. A gratitude prayer as you wake up in the morning can change your day and over time, the direction of your life. By saying thank you for our healing journey, thank you for the lessons, and thank you for all the stuff we've worked through and have yet to get to, we open ourselves up to the magic of acceptance and unconditional love.
